La residenza artistica

Idee Cinematografiche Differenti is an artistic residence for authors/screenwriters under 35 that offers the opportunity to create 6 original film subjects – 3 for fiction, 3 for documentary – able to investigate the concept of “diversity”.

The project promotes a professional, technical and artistic path, guided by experts in the field, focusing on the notion of ‘diversity’, a word understood in its deepest social and linguistic sense, combined with the themes of equal opportunities and non-discrimination.

Following a call of interest, 6 young screenwriters will be selected who, during their 15 days of residency in Naples, will develop their initial idea, to propose it – once defined in terms of subject – to an audience of producers and film commissioners during the International Film Festival OMovies.

Purpose of the artistic residency:

The aims and objectives of the residency project address two different needs: on the one hand, those related to specific objectives relevant to creative and artistic production; on the other, those linked to cultural and social aims related to the contents (and processes) that the residency itself proposes.

From the point of view of the specific objectives, i.e. those linked to the creative-artistic aspects, the project intends to promote and support the most ‘fragile’ and ‘defenseless’ phase of the creative process, that is, the development of an idea. Indeed, Idee Cinematografiche Differenti wants to support original ideas (in their draft state) in order to support their development and make them become first film subjects, then screenplays and potential audiovisual products.

Therefore, during a 15-day cinematic artistic residency in Naples, the project allows authors/screenwriters to explore their original idea linked to the notion of ‘difference’. This word is the starting point of the path around which young authors/screenwriters under 35 will have to develop their idea. From different ideas and thanks to the residency, 6 original subjects for cinema will be developed with the aim of presenting them to potential producers and to the public of the International Film Festival OMovies itself.

The final meeting between the participants in the residency, the producers and the audience of the Festival, also responds to the objective of wanting to make concrete and evident a creative path that usually remains hidden, closed or confined in offices and/or drawers of a room. The residency is, therefore, designed to be a point of arrival and a starting point, a moment of discussion where creativity, technical and professional skills and operational tools find a place to promote art, original artistic production, civil commitment, social and cultural innovation.

It is precisely the themes linked to social and cultural innovation that open a dialogue related to the aims of the project that go beyond the purely productive-creative aspect. Indeed, the residency project intends to encourage a focus and a further understanding of the concept of ‘diversity’. What does it mean to be ‘different’ in the contemporary society? What values and identities do we (re)produce or transform when we talk about ‘diversity’? Who/what is considered ‘different’ and how can diversity be represented?

In this sense, Idee Cinematografiche Differenti becomes a place of research and experimentation, in line with the aims of the I-LanD Interuniversity Research Centre, thanks to the support of artists and researchers, teachers and experts in writing for the cinema. The dialogue between the participants in the residency and the public of the International Film Festival OMovies also wants to ‘put under the spotlight’ the work of young authors/screenwriters, extending the artistic debate and content of the residency to the general public. The project, therefore, intends to promote an interchange of knowledge and skills, whose final products are only the tip of the iceberg of an original and profound process, where young authors/screenwriters can find a home.
